things to see and do

If you love the beach, Antigua is the place for you as it’s reputed to have a beach for every day of the year. Unlike our other four islands, the white-sand beaches and scalloped shoreline are breathtakingly beautiful.

Antigua is almost completely surrounded by coral reefs so it’s a great place for exploring beneath the waves, with a snorkel or scuba, and its also a great destination of sailing, hosting the Caribbean’s largest regatta at the end of April each year.

Getting Around
Take taxis or hire a car. The Reception staff will be happy to organise this for you.
Nelson's Dockyard, English Harbour
This British naval dockyard located in the English Harbour was once one of the most important British bases in the Caribbean. Its buildings have been restored to give an impression of what it must have been like in its heyday. This is also the location for Antigua's yacht marina.
St John's
Antigua's capital has not only a wide selection of duty-free shops, restaurants and bars it also has an interesting cathedral, along with botanic gardens and a distillery.
Cricket
You won't need to go far to see a cricket match in Antigua but the Recreation Ground near St John's is the best place to see the bigger, organised matches.
Carnival
Second only in size to the huge Trinidad carnival, Antigua's carnival is a major national event centred around Carnival City at the Recreation Ground, not far from the centre of St Johns. A huge outdoor stage becomes the focal point for colourful, noisy and highly entertaining shows, staged every night for a week, starting from the first Monday and Tuesday in August
Sailing
There is a wide range of trips on offer locally if you want to explore the neighbouring island of Barbuda, or the deserted beaches of some of Antigua's 30 offshore islets. Antigua's Sailing Week is held in late April and based at Nelson's Dockyard.
Diving
Diving courses can be booked through your hotel and will allow you to explore Antigua's fabulous coral gardens. The reefs off neighbouring, undeveloped Barbuda are particularly recommended.
